So you’re looking to purchase an awning but you’re not sure what size awning you need. Well look no further as we have a simple guide on how to measure your caravan so the perfect awning can fit.

Awning dimensions can seem like a mind boggling concept however, it is pretty simple once you know. Most caravan manufacturers list the awning size in your caravans handbook, but if you don’t have this to hand or it doesn’t list it then follow our simple steps below.

How To Measure Up For A Full Awning

  1. Place a peg in the ground directly below point A (if the ground allows for a peg to be positioned).
  2. Attach the string to the peg and feed the string through the awning rail and all the way around the caravan until you get the end of the awning rail on the other side (Point B)
  3. As soon as you get to point B, cut the string as close to the ground as possible.
  4. Now remove the string from the awning rail and lay the string straight on the floor.
  5. Once done, get a tape measure and measure the string. Ideally in centimetres (cm). Most awning manufacturers work in centimetres. The recorded length in centimetres is the awning size.
  6. The final step is to shop around for an awning. Be aware that some awning manufacturers may not label their awning sizes in cm, but they do provide a conversion table for you to find the correct size.

How To Measure Up For A porch Awning

There is no easy answer for how to measure a porch awning. Porch awning sizes can depend on the customers preference, the height of the caravan and also if the awning will interfere with windows and lockers.

Regardless, we provide you with a handy guide on how to measure up for a porch awning and also what to look out for.

  1. Check the height – You will need to check the height of your caravan/motorhome. Most caravans are 235 – 250cm and the majority of porch awnings will fit this standard height range. Although there are some caravans and motorhomes that do go outside this parameter and this can limit the amount of porch awnings available. To measure the height, start at the lowest point of the vehicle and measure it up to the highest part of the awning rail as illustrated (D-D).
  2. Check the width – Many porch awnings come in different sizes. Some of the standard sizes are 260, 300 and 390. These numbers are referring to the width of the awning in cm. But before opting for your desirable porch awning, there are a few things to consider.
    1. Check the maximum width – If you look at A-A this will show you the maximum width available as the awning channel has to remain straight for porch awnings.
    2. Check that there are no interference with windows and doors – Now you have the maximum width that the porch awning can be, this doesn’t mean that this is the size to opt for. If you look at A-A on the diagram you will see that the awning would lay over the window and obstruct it from opening. Whereas B-B shows the minimum size the porch awning can be without obstructing any windows and external locker doors. C-C on the other hand highlights the maximum length that will not interfere with any windows our external locker doors.

As you can see it is not clear cut when choosing a porch awning but now you know what you must consider before opting for the awning of your choice. Now what are you waiting for? Dive into our range of porch awnings on offer.
